HAKIMI: The GOAT or A Goat.

Updated: Apr 16, 2023

Soccer is a demanding sport; It is a complex game that requires physical energy, grit and a lot of concentration. There is no wonder why many footballers assign trustees, lawyers and family members to help them manage their estates and whatever finances they are bringing in, Asraf Hakimi is no different.

Separations and divorces, two sadly and unusually common phenomenon increasing in a rapidly transforming and developing world. News of divorce or separations permeate the news media every other day...and today, when we read these news, we just utter the famous "and another one" phrase popularized by American artiste DJ Khalid. It's nothing new anymore as we have all come to realize, people marry, and people divorce, life goes on or not (for some). All of a sudden, in this amusingly different divorce scenario playing out currently somewhere in the world, something is amiss, someone has got tongues wagging, accusations slinging and praise singing; The man behind it, Achraf Hakimi.

Who? Born Achraf Hakimi on November 4, 1998 in Madrid, Spain to Moroccan parents; Hakimi at age 17 had gone ahead to make his senior international debut for Morocco simultaneously featuring in the 2018 & 2022 FIFA world cup while already being a regular face in the Real Madrid team. Currently playing for Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint Germain, Hakimi is always assured a place among the starting eleven. The News Having a damning rape accusation hanging over his head, a threatened football career and a now crashed marriage, Hakimi isn't having the best times of his life currently; However, he is also definitely not having it all bad, as he is set to walk away from financial commitments arising from his divorce to his actress wife Hiba Abouk who he got married to in a secret wedding in 2020. Hakimi being investigated in Paris, France, for alleged rape was the last straw that broke the camel's back as his marriage was on the brink of collapse.

The GOAT or A Goat? Recently, during court proceedings preceding from a divorce case filed by his wife who intended to claim half of all the footballer owned, it was discovered that he infact owns nothing as all that he has made in terms of earnings and bought throughout his career so far was registered in his mother's name, and Hakimi would always ask his mother to buy anything he needed for him, even his personal accessories. Crazy right?! You know what's crazier? The number of people (mostly men) who have come out to praise him for taking such a "wise" decision that would have - at the moment because of his ongoing divorce - cost him more than half his wealth, if not all. It is reported that his houses, cars, clothes, and jewelries were bought in his mother’s name, and millions in salary deposited in accounts bearing her name also making it almost impossible to be touched by external factors like...a divorce. Interestingly the 24 year old PSG player is one of the highest earning players in the French league receiving more than €1 Million from PSG monthly, 80% of this is said to be deposited in his mother Mrs. Fatima's account. Takes? Different strokes for different folks many say. Marriage as an instituition more than ever before is also been threatened by many issues like poverty, pride, sick ideologies, promiscuity, social media, extramarital affairs, "wokeness", social constructs, 'bad belle' family members, spirituality, alcoholism, trust issues, stinky morning breaths, dirty shoes and socks.....yes, that too. Amidst it all, people are looking out for themselves; there are signatures given on contract papers(call them prenups if you want), secrets stored, secret stash, get-away plans ready to be carried out to protect each one from the other just incase something happens along the line, and this presents such a sad reality for some. Some people say 'once bitten twice shy' and so they do what they want to do. In other cases, people don't have any reason for doing what they do; I'd say people are what they are and they will do what they are capable of, even Achraf Hakimi.

Albeit cold lessons can be learnt from former Arsenal player Emmanuel Eboue who when faced with a similar situation lost everything he had worked for - including his children. He unknowingly - out of ignorance - signed off all he had worked for to his ex-wife who claimed everything and left him kissing the dust. He has been unable to rise above that experience many years later. This argument is the basis of the big pat on the back for Hakimi by the men folk who hail him a "seer", "GOAT" etc. They claimed he had figured a hack or as many called it "a well hidden secret.". On the other hand, many argue against his actions, especially the women who refer to him as a "man-child" "mummy's boy" etc. They don't want to ever have to deal with someone like Hakimi. Lisa's tweet "God forbid bad thing.", is a testament to that. Whatever Hakimi did proved to be necessary for his survival whether we like it or not; on the other hand there is and should be an undeniable consideration for every 'foundation of thought' - that translates to actions. There is a root. Fear, past experiences, manipulation by his mum (you can never rule this out) and the one billion reasons why he did it. The crux of the matter is, the GOAT or a goat, we are in no place to judge. That's that.

PS: Hakimi's rape case is still currently being investigated by the French government, and at the end of the day it is a more serious issue than whether someone gets something or not after a divorce. At the conclusion of the investigation, we hope the truth is out, justice takes its course and every one finds redemption.

Bye.
